The short version of what Combinable Crops does and why it exists.
A crop-specific layer over the cropping record, carrying the agronomy, market specification and scheme interactions particular to each combinable crop. It answers the questions a general farm management system cannot: whether this variety will hit milling protein on this soil, whether the break crop is worth it against the rotation, and what the malting contract will actually reject on.

Why Combinable Crops exists
A crop-specific layer over the cropping record, carrying the agronomy, market specification and scheme interactions particular to each combinable crop. It answers the questions a general farm management system cannot: whether this variety will hit milling protein on this soil, whether the break crop is worth it against the rotation, and what the malting contract will actually reject on.
Cereals occupy roughly three million hectares in England alone, a third of the cropped area, and combinable crop margins are now routinely negative before support. Defra Farm Business Income data has shown general cropping farms forecast to halve in a single year, with crop output falling while livestock output rose. On thin Cotswold brash and similar droughty limestone soils, spring malting barley frequently outperforms a marginal second wheat, and the difference between the two decisions is often larger than any input saving available elsewhere.
