Weed Management & Blackgrass

The single biggest recoverable margin on many arable farms.

Herbicide-resistant blackgrass is the most expensive weed problem in UK arable farming and the most responsive to integrated, non-chemical management. This module maps populations at sub-field resolution, tracks resistance status, plans the cultural programme — drilling date, rotation, cultivation, competitive varieties — and measures whether the population is actually falling.

The ground reality

What is actually happening in weed management in the UK

Published research has put the mean cost of herbicide resistance in blackgrass at around £155 per hectare, roughly 14 per cent of potential gross margin, with UK-wide costs estimated in the hundreds of millions of pounds and substantial tonnage lost annually. Chemistry alone no longer controls resistant populations, which makes the cultural programme — and the discipline to hold it for several seasons — the determining factor.

Figures are as published at the time of writing. Farm policy and payment rates change frequently — verify against the primary source before relying on any number here.

Weed Management — a walkthrough

A working pass through weed management: entering the record once, and watching it appear in the evidence pack, the calendar and the scheme application without being typed again.

Capabilities

What Weed Management does

Every capability below is built on the same underlying record, so entering something once is enough for it to appear wherever it is needed.

Record and plan

  • Sub-field weed population mapping from field walking, drone and satellite imagery
  • Blackgrass head count protocol with year-on-year population trend
  • Herbicide resistance testing record and status by field

Operate and monitor

  • Cultural control programme planner across drilling date, rotation and cultivation
  • Competitive variety and seed rate adjustment for weed suppression
  • Spring cropping decision support with margin comparison

Comply and evidence

  • Stale seedbed and glyphosate stack planning
  • Patch spraying and spot treatment prescription generation
  • Mechanical and precision weeding integration

Analyse and improve

  • Herbicide programme design by mode of action with resistance stewardship
  • Combine hygiene and seed spread prevention planning
  • Multi-year population trajectory modelling against the chosen programme

End to end

How Weed Management runs, start to finish

The module is modelled as a state machine, so at any point the business knows exactly which stage every record is at and what has to happen next.

  1. 1

    Map and count the population

This is where the record starts, and getting it right here removes work at every later stage.

  2. 2

    Test and record resistance status

The platform prompts only for what this stage genuinely needs, and carries everything forward.

  3. 3

    Model the multi-year trajectory

Conflicts with scheme rules, regulatory windows and existing commitments are flagged here rather than discovered later.

  4. 4

    Design the cultural programme

Capture works offline, so this stage is completed in the field rather than remembered afterwards.

  5. 5

    Adjust rotation and drilling date

Everything recorded at this point becomes evidence automatically, in every format that will later ask for it.

  6. 6

    Execute with hygiene discipline

This is the stage most businesses currently do twice, once for the operation and once for the paperwork.

  7. 7

    Re-count and measure the change

Results feed the whole-farm view, so the effect of this stage is visible against the rest of the business.

  8. 8

    Adapt the programme on evidence

The cycle closes here, and what is learned is carried into next season's plan rather than lost.

Who uses it

Built around four real jobs, not one generic user

Each of these people needs something different from the same record. The module is designed so none of them has to work around the others.

Heavy land arable farmer

Severe blackgrass pressure

Needs a multi-year programme, not another chemistry option.

Agronomist

Resistance management

Needs population data to justify cultural change to a reluctant client.

Contractor

Cultivation and drilling

Needs field-specific instruction on hygiene and timing.

Land agent

Assessing land value

Needs to understand a blackgrass burden as a valuation factor.

Measurement

How you will know it is working

The module reports against these measures from the day it is switched on, so the value is demonstrable rather than assumed.

  • 01Heads per square metre trend
  • 02Hectares at each pressure class
  • 03Herbicide spend per hectare
  • 04Yield penalty attributed to weeds
  • 05Programme adherence rate

Cost of Herbicide Resistance Calculator

Apply the published margin penalty from resistant blackgrass to your own area and pressure, and see what a cultural programme is worth.

How this is calculated

The published mean cost of resistance is scaled by your stated pressure level and applied to the affected area and margin. Recovery assumes a multi-year cultural programme reducing the population progressively rather than a single-season fix.

Cultural control works over several seasons and fails if abandoned after one difficult autumn. The model shows the trajectory, not a one-year saving.

Later drilling, spring cropping, stale seedbeds and rotation change.
Current annual cost of resistance £
Cost per hectare £/ha
Recoverable over five years £
Net benefit of the programme £/yr

Questions answered

What people ask about Weed Management

Does this replace the software I already use?

Not necessarily. Agrivencia integrates with authoritative sources and mainstream packages rather than insisting on replacing them. Where an incumbent does one job well, the platform connects to it; where the job spans several systems and nobody does it, the platform does it.

Will it work where I have no signal?

Yes. Field capture in Weed Management is offline first, storing locally and synchronising when a connection returns. Only around a fifth of UK farms report reliable signal across the whole holding, so this is a design assumption rather than a feature.

What happens when the scheme rules change?

Scheme rules are held as data rather than code, so a rate change, a cap change or a window closure is a content update that takes effect the same day. The platform also alerts you to what the change does to your own position.

Who owns the data I put in?

You do. The Farm Data Charter gives you a complete export in open formats at any time, and every instance of data sharing requires an explicit, revocable consent that is visible in your account.

Does it work if I farm across a border?

Yes, and that is one of the main reasons the platform exists. A business with land in more than one nation sees one reconciled view rather than two portals, with obligations and deadlines from both administrations in a single calendar.

Can my agronomist or land agent use it too?

Yes. You grant scoped, time-limited access per holding and per module, and you can revoke it in one click. Advisers never get a shared password or a blanket view.

What is the biggest limitation of this module?

Programme abandonment after one difficult season. Mitigated by multi-year trajectory visibility. We would rather state that plainly than let you discover it after signing.
