Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026
Pay farmers for environmental actions taken alongside food production, as the principal replacement for area-based direct payments in England.
The reset offer reduced the number of actions from 102 to 71, introduced a hard annual payment cap of £100,000 per agreement, removed the £50 per hectare management payment and redirected it into environmental actions, and shortened agreements from five years to three with quarterly payment. Two application windows operate, with Defra committing to publish budget-fill updates at 25, 50 and 75 per cent and to warn before closure — a direct response to the abrupt closure of the previous offer.
