Climate Risk & Adaptation

Climate Adaptation: For Farmers

What Climate Adaptation changes for the person actually doing the work.

For the person running the business, the test of any farm software is whether it removes work or adds it. Adaptation planning is the discipline of deciding, in advance, what the business will do when conditions fall outside the historic range. This module assesses physical climate risk to the specific holding, models the effect on cropping and livestock systems, and builds costed contingency plans with defined trigger points.

In their words

What the job actually looks like

These are not marketing personas. Each one is a distinct job with a distinct constraint, and the module is designed so that solving one does not create work for the others.

01

Farm business owner

Long-term planning

Needs to know which investments actually reduce exposure.

  1. Assess hazard exposure for the holding
  2. Analyse historic weather and trend
  3. Model the effect on each enterprise
  4. Identify the critical vulnerabilities
02

Arable manager

Wet autumn drilling

Needs a decision rule for when to abandon the drilling plan.

  1. Analyse historic weather and trend
  2. Model the effect on each enterprise
  3. Identify the critical vulnerabilities
  4. Set trigger thresholds and contingency actions
03

Livestock farmer

Summer drought

Needs forage contingency triggered early rather than late.

  1. Model the effect on each enterprise
  2. Identify the critical vulnerabilities
  3. Set trigger thresholds and contingency actions
  4. Cost and prioritise adaptation investment

End to end

How Climate Adaptation runs, start to finish

The module is modelled as a state machine, so at any point the business knows exactly which stage every record is at and what has to happen next.

  1. 1

Assess hazard exposure for the holding

This is where the record starts, and getting it right here removes work at every later stage.

  2. 2

    Analyse historic weather and trend

The platform prompts only for what this stage genuinely needs, and carries everything forward.

  3. 3

Model the effect on each enterprise

Conflicts with scheme rules, regulatory windows and existing commitments are flagged here rather than discovered later.

  4. 4

    Identify the critical vulnerabilities

Capture works offline, so this stage is completed in the field rather than remembered afterwards.

  5. 5

Set trigger thresholds and contingency actions

Everything recorded at this point becomes evidence automatically, in every format that will later ask for it.

  6. 6

    Cost and prioritise adaptation investment

This is the stage most businesses currently do twice, once for the operation and once for the paperwork.

  7. 7

Rehearse the plan before it is needed

Results feed the whole-farm view, so the effect of this stage is visible against the rest of the business.

  8. 8

    Review after every significant event

The cycle closes here, and what is learned is carried into next season's plan rather than lost.

Capabilities

What Climate Adaptation does

Every capability below is built on the same underlying record, so entering something once is enough for it to appear wherever it is needed.

Record and plan

  • Physical climate risk assessment for the holding location
  • Historic weather series analysis with trend and extreme event frequency
  • Drought, flood, heat and waterlogging exposure mapping by field

Operate and monitor

  • Cropping system resilience assessment against projected conditions
  • Livestock heat stress and housing adaptation planning
  • Contingency plan authoring with defined trigger thresholds

Comply and evidence

  • Water security planning linked to the abstraction and storage modules
  • Variety and species diversification for risk spreading
  • Insurance and risk transfer option appraisal

Analyse and improve

  • Business interruption modelling for extreme events
  • Workable days analysis under changing conditions
  • Adaptation investment prioritisation by risk reduction per pound

Payment schedule

What is due, and when it lands

Farm support arrives in instalments from several bodies on different calendars. Set against your own overdraft, the question is not how much but when — so the ledger is ordered by date, not by scheme.

Sample
Scheduled and expected scheme payments, in date order
When Payment From Amount Status
June Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026 Defra / Rural Payments Agency Expected
June Water Management Grant Defra / Rural Payments Agency Agreed
February Farming Transformation Fund Defra / Rural Payments Agency Eligible
March Countryside Stewardship Defra / Natural England / Rural Payments Agency Eligible
June Environmental Land Management Capital Grants Defra / Rural Payments Agency Eligible
December Farming Equipment and Technology Fund Defra / Rural Payments Agency Eligible
  • Agreed and scheduled
  • Claimed, awaiting payment
  • Eligible, unclaimed

What the statuses mean

Agreed
Under a signed agreement with a scheduled payment date.
Expected
Claimed and assessed; payment date per the published standard.
Eligible
Your holding appears to qualify but nothing is claimed yet.

Amounts are blank because they depend on your own holding, your agreements and current payment rates. Rates change during a scheme year, so the ledger always shows the rate it used and the date it read it.

What changes

  • Yield volatility by enterprise
  • Contingency plans with defined triggers
  • Adaptation investment made

What we are hearing

The problems people describe to us

These are composite statements drawn from user research conversations, not attributed customer quotes. We publish named references only with written consent.

I am not short of software. I am short of one place where the same field means the same thing in all of it.

Arable farm managerEast of England

The scheme closed on a Tuesday evening. I had the application half built. Nobody told me the budget was nearly gone.

Mixed farmerMidlands

We farm on both sides of the border. Everything takes twice as long and I still cannot see the whole position on one screen.

Livestock producerWelsh border

Audit week costs me three days. Every single record they ask for is already written down somewhere on this farm.

Measurement

How you will know it is working

The module reports against these measures from the day it is switched on, so the value is demonstrable rather than assumed.

  • 03Adaptation investment made
  • 04Business interruption days
  • 05Workable days achieved
